Given that Amir Katz has studied with Fleisher and Perahia, the thoughtfulness of this Liszt should come as no great surprise. This is Liszt more in the manner of Brendel than Cziffra.
But it takes a great musician to deliver this strategy, given the virtuoso leanings of the repertoire. ‘Gnomenreigen’ is slow with some sparkle, but miles away from Arrau’s glory. With the Paganini Études, it is the second, with its sparkly descents, that impresses. But the third feels like it’s being played at rehearsal speed, as do parts of Réminiscences de Don Juan. The Transcendental Studies fare better, ‘Mazeppa’ at least somewhat invoking a wild horse ride, but there is not enough here for a recommendation.
