It is great to have a second commercial recording available of Reuchsel’s complete Promenades en Provence, music both highly evocative and often transcendentally difficult. The recording in question is a fascinating one, made nearly 40 years ago on the legendary Rouen Cavaillé-Coll. Organist Pierre Labric – surely one of the most unsung of Dupré’s disciples – provides typically atmospheric and often virtuosic performances. The only slight disappointment is the recorded sound, François Carbou intriguingly claiming that the original tapes are being held illegally by the producer, compelling this CD to be prepared from copies of variable quality. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful disc and a highly valuable companion to Simon Nieminski’s enterprising Pro Organo recording from 2002.
