Recorded live at the BBC Proms in 2018, this release follows hot on the heels of Book I (reviewed in IP March 2020). Once more, Schiff uses a Steinway, its clarity and projection more suitable for the acoustic space than his usual Bösendorfer. The process of performing the piece complete in one span is perfect for Schiff ’s interpretative outlook: introspective, non- interventional, pure. Even more than Book I, there is delicious inevitability. Pedal use is minimised, making its rare appearances all the more effective; the same is true of moments when the music dances.

This is a glorious supplement to Schiff ’s studio version, embodying all the freshness of his ECM recording but with the added frisson of a live event. The Blu-ray clarity is magnificent.
