‘L’Unique’ is the title of the Sarabande from the eighth ordre, which is played complete along with the sixth and seventh ordres from Couperin’s second book of Pièces de clavecin (1716-17), contemporary with L’art de toucher le clavecin. The American Jory Vinikour has an authentic feel for this music, and has cultivated a neat manner of playing ornaments with an abundance of repetitions. He plays with forward momentum, although there is scope for the revolutionary Passacaille to be played with more gravitas. The harpsichord is very well recorded, with a good balance between clarity, tone and ambience.
