These are classic performances reissued on French Decca (the notes are French only). The Labèque touch is such that tonal contrasts in the Rhapsody in Blue are almost orchestrally delineated. The performance is technically amazing, with no concessions to diffi culty. Encompassing delicacy, teasing and glissandi that are positively outrageous, this is a miraculous performance. The Concerto shares the same sort of ease with the jazz idiom, in tandem with a remarkable intuitive grasp. The central slow movement evinces tremendous style and character, while the finale blends buzzing energy with passion and precision. If only the playing time was more generous.
