The Stralsund Stellwagen is perhaps the most important surviving 17th-century organ in Germany, built new after a fire, and still intact. Rost knows this organ well, having overseen the recent restoration, and his playing on this disc is most impressive. The huge range of colour is spectacular, from a beautiful chorale fantasia by Morhard to the majestic grandeur of the final partita of the Böhm chorale variations: subtle flutes, vocal principals, colourful reeds, a huge plenum, meantone tuning and wonderful acoustics. A fine recorded sound, and excellent notes with registrations given, complete an outstanding release.
