This compilation, culled from the back-catalogues of Simax, Aurora and Philips, takes from recordings dating back as far as analogue tapes from 1978. While it’s a coherent proposition – Harald Herresthal champions leading Norwegian composers of the last century in solid and sound performances – the full-price bracket (with no booklet and just the barest of notes) seems decidedly curious. Complaint over, Nystedt’s glittering, French-accented Suite d’orgue is richly executed by dedicatee Herresthal, Nordheim’s Response III for organ, electronics and percussion vividly realised, and Egil Hovland’s virtuoso Toccata on ‘Now Thank We All Our God’ and atmospheric Il canto del mare evocatively dispatched.
