Kalevi Aho (b. 1949) is one of Finland’s foremost contemporary composers. The organ works presented here by Jan Lehtola date from 1974 to 2011 and illustrate both the composer’s interest in counterpoint (there is a completion of Bach’s final fugue Contrapunctus XIV) and enigmatic textures reflecting the influence of his teacher, Einojuhani Rautavaara. The highlights are the pieces with instruments: a substantial Quasi una fantasia for horn and organ and a more mellow Epilogue for trombone and organ. The Song of the Earth, with its haunting interplay between violin and oboe, is a thing of real beauty.
