This is the final release of the project to record complete Buxtehude vocal and instrumental music. The excellent instrumentalists are supplemented by good solo singers, whose clarity of diction and expressive phrasing and dynamics (recorded rather closely in the Waalse Kerk, Amsterdam) are supported by fluent tempi and solid rhythmic direction. Genres are well juxtaposed: Latin works, sacred concertos, Lutheran hymn settings, pietist poem settings, psalm settings, a wedding piece, and the Canon and Gigue (BuxWV 121). Without doubt, Buxtehude was a great composer, and the regrettable lack of knowledge concerning performance practices should encourage many more different approaches to his music.
