If this is not the most viscerally thrilling, imaginative account of Strauss’s mountainous masterpiece, it is extremely well played and recorded. More interesting, however, are the symphonic interludes he extracted from his autobiographical opera Intermezzo, rarely heard out of context, utterly winning, and here presented full of life.
