Hearing Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition as a child made Alexander Gavrylyuk decide to devote his life to music. You may think you know this piece by now, I can assure you, you don’t until you hear this CD. Coupling Mussorgsky, painted al fresco in large symphonic gestures, with Schumann’s delicate and intimate Kinderszenen may seems unlikely, but Gavrylyuk lifts Schumann’s miniatures from Biedermeier bonds. The piano and Gavrylyuk’s impressive dynamic range is recorded brilliantly. Gavrylyuk’s disc, recorded November 2013, is a real treasure.
