A remastered reissue late last year of the 1956 mono recording, with Irmgard Seefried an outstanding soloist against slightly less exciting colleagues, Tourel, Simoneau and Warfield. The Westminster Choir (Dayton, Ohio) is superbly responsive to Walter’s admirably prescient interpretation which he keeps moving without the slightest loss of pathos, maintaining a clarity which also excludes any betrayal of the age of the recording. This is a performance to be treasured for its fidelity and absence of over-indulgent sentiment, even though it lacks any scholarly attempt to clarify authorship.
