Buxtehude’s seven Latin cantatas that comprise Membra Jesu Nostri (BUXWV 75) were dedicated to Gustav Düben in 1680. Each cantata, a setting from the medieval Passiontide poem Salve mundi salu- tare, is based on an individual member of Christ’s body. This brave venture by a choir of professional lay clerks and English choristers has much to commend it, although the ‘English’ tone, tuning and control in the treble part could be better. The instrumental playing is excellent, with stylish phrasing and fine ensemble. The character of the many different movements is well projected through committed tempi and a well-balanced, clear recording.
