On this CD Elektra Women’s Choir Vancouver gives an eloquent performance of Rheinberger’s music for upper voices. The Mass is a series of richly romantic phrases, in which the composer maintains throughout a strict integrity of line and form. The Adoramus te from the Three Latin Hymns op.96 (for SSA and organ) is a stunning 3-part canon with a haunting refrain, here given an exceptional performance by the clear voices of Elektra, a musically expressive and technically adroit choir. The op.18 Six Hymns (for SS choir and organ, and containing three Marian hymns) is performed with great delicacy by the sopranos. The remaining repertoire is a setting of Psalm 84 ‘How lovely are thy dwellings’ for SSAA and harp. More at home in the concert hall, this is music in the romantic mould which might be mistaken for Mendelssohn. Girls’ choirs, take note: you will be on to a winner.
