The 2007 French-Romantic style Grönlund organ of the new Sibelius Hall is put through its paces in this collection of concert works. Franck’s Pièce héroïque is the only actual French concert piece here. Composed for the opening of the Trocadéro organ, there is good argument for registering beyond the published markings; however, I found Kiviniemi’s heavy registration obtrusive. Perhaps the organ is more successful live, but on the basis of this recording (even in SACD format) the grand French Romantic sound feels confined and oppressively muddy. Lacking the space of a grand cathedral, it becomes tiring to the ear, and there is also a surprising amount of action noise for a new instrument.
