This is a pleasant CD: currently popular choral composers and agreeable singing all adding up to easy listening for a hot summer evening. David N. Childs’s interpretation of the music veers toward the romantic. This works in most cases, but doesn’t quite hit the mark for works by Pärt or Tavener, which need a more austere, unworldly atmosphere. A discovery for me is Abbie Betinis’s To the Evening Star, a well-crafted, atmospheric piece with an interesting part for the flute. Three of the texts are missing from the booklet, presumably because of copyright costs.
