From the 44 anthems that were selected to create the Choirbook for the Queen, which was published to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, eleven were specially commissioned for the anthology, and these (plus two other anthems) are assembled on this disc. Like the complete publication, it creates an eclectic collection of British choral pieces, some with organ accompaniment, and the highly professional BBC Singers under Stephen Cleobury’s sensitive direction draws the best from all of them, though some of the musical settings are less appealing than the wide range of interesting textual sources which inspired the composers to respond.
