This is an attractive compilation of toccatas, canzonas, arias, correntes, capriccios and liturgical works from Frescobaldi’s later years. Supporting the variety of genres is a plethora of instruments: a fine Italian harpsichord by Colin Booth, a 1558 Antegnati organ, soprano, recorder, renaissance flute, cello, plus an Italian choir of men’s voices for the alternatim versets. This is the final volume of a series of CDs dedicated to Frescobaldi, not intended to be ‘complete’ but reflecting the scope of his prodigious output. As such, the series presents a new slant on this important composer. A worthy achievement.
