This highly enjoyable collection of many of S.S. Wesley’s most celebrated anthems – in addition to the title track, the disc includes Blessed be the God and Father and Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace – is a useful introduction to his œuvre, and reminds us just how innovative a figure Wesley was in the development of the Anglican tradition during the 19th century. Nethsinga and his St John’s forces respond to the manner born to the obvious dramatic aspects of Wesley’s style (shades of Mendelssohn), but also produce some tender readings of the composer’s quieter, more reflective manner. The programme also includes a beautifully delivered account of Wesley senior’s chants for Psalms 42 and 43. Highly recommended.
