YL was founded in 1883 and is Finland’s longest-serving Finnish-language vocal group. Their distinguished history includes commissioning and premiering many of Sibelius’s works for male chorus, and the choir continues to promote contemporary music to this day. This mixed recital disc presents an excellent showcase of the group’s current high standards, with a programme ranging from the ever-popular Whitacre (his male voice arrangement of Lux Aurumque) to Orff, Penderecki and Poulenc by way of Pärt, the Finns Madetoja and Kverno, and Japanese composer Ko Matsushita. YL, under their youthful director Pasi Hyökki, acquit themselves admirably in a very demanding and varied programme. Very occasionally the singers push a little too hard, resulting in a raw, rough-edged tone noticeable at the top of the register.
