The four voices of the Austrian (actually Carinthian) vocal group Schnittpunktvokal are new to me; judging by this beautifully programmed CD of gentle sacred songs across the ages, that has been my loss. Joined by guitar and (slightly improbably) saxophone in some numbers, the recital makes for wonderfully calm, late-night listening after a busy day. The material isn’t all sacred: there are some fine folksong arrangements and one or two secular items (from Schubert, for example). Voces Quietus comes with a lovely surprise: a bonus CD of Christmas carols from southern Austria.
