This well thought-out programme shows how these two composers provide an excellent foil for each other. The older more adventurous Holst must have left people wondering where he was going to venture next, in contrast to the very English more restrained, finely crafted approach of Finzi. Holst’s Nunc Dimittis makes a good contrast to Finzi’s Magnificat and there are stunning performances of Holst’s unusual and atmospheric The Evening Watch, and Finzi’s exultant Lo, the full, final Sacrifice. The cathedral choir is admirable throughout, the girls’ voices not only contrasting but blending beautifully with the men, and under director Andrew Lumsden they capture the essential essence of this music. It’s a very enjoyable experience.
