This is a beautiful record. Emily Askew is an arranger of prodigious talent and creativity, steeped in the folk musical traditions of southern England. Although it has been wonderful in recent years to see the fertile conjunction of medieval and folk musics explored increasingly widely on stage and on record, I can think of few musicians rooted so deeply in both camps, and Askew and her colleagues present a veritable musical kaleidoscope in which ancient fragments of melody are given true immediacy within a living, breathing folk tradition.

Delicate fiddle filigree on Alle Psallite Cum Luya and Winter/Tourdion and heartfelt, plangent corporate vocal harmony on Pase el agoa ma Julieta are high points for me, though it seems almost insidious to pick favourite moments from a disc of such effervescent creativity. Vocals, recorders, fiddles, vielle, bagpipes, shawm, bells, frames drums, harp, viola d’amore, riq, guitar, bendir, cajón and udo are used judiciously to present a shifting and varied soundscape, and the whole is sensitively recorded by John Dipper.
