After a short burst of Langlais, and notwithstanding Lazzeri’s Toccata Rieger, the remainder of this disc is formed entirely of transcriptions and arrangements by Lo Muscio. The transcriptions suffer from some rather odd registration choices – the constant juxtaposition of ‘baroque’ solo sounds against romantic strings being particularly unconvincing. Lo Muscio’s own Concert Variations on ‘Greensleeves’ makes an interesting tour de force, although it does reveal the harmonic limitations of the melody. The recording is perhaps a little too distant for enough clarity in the tuttis; however, the rest of the time one can soak up the spaciousness of this great basilica.
